Sitagliptin Phosphate Tablets — FDA Approved

Posted by Solitary Dancer on February 12, 2007

A New Option for Blood Sugar Control

Original Article in Physician’s Weekly:

The FDA has approved sitagliptin phosphate tablets (Januvia, Merck and Co., Inc.) to improve blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The oral agent is a first-in-class medication that prolongs the activity of proteins that increase the release of insulin. It blocks the dipeptidyl peptidase IV enzyme, which breaks down these proteins. The drug should be used in addition to diet and exercise either alone or in combination with other oral diabetes medications. It is also indicated when lifestyle changes and oral therapy fail to provide adequate blood sugar control.
